About the store
My main K-12 teaching experience is as the lead Gifted/Talented teacher for grades 2-8 in a rural Missouri district. There was no curriculum when I arrived so I developed all kinds of new units and lessons in many different subjects. While in college I taught at a Child Development Center for pre-schoolers and interned in a 3rd grade classroom. At the University of Missouri I taught courses in the Teacher Development Program as well as the Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis department. I taught courses on theory and philosophy as well as those implementing topics, ideas, and lessons in the classroom.

Experience

My main K-12 teaching experience is as the lead Gifted/Talented teacher for grades 2-8 in a rural Missouri district. I taught courses on theory and philosophy as well as those implementing topics, ideas, and lessons in the classroom.

Teaching style

My teaching style centers around the idea of teacher as facilitator. I utilize all kinds of different instruction techniques as a way to try to reach each student where they are and in ways they learn best. However, I also challenge students with differentiated instruction, questioning techniques, reflective activities, and/or projects that allow for options in showing what they've learned in their own way.

Awards & shining teacher moments

High Flyer Award for Outstanding Teaching (University of Missouri); Who's Who Among America's Teachers (x2); Invited Educator: NASA Earth-to-Orbit Curriculum Field Test & Symposium; Sigma Tau Delta (English) Honors Fraternity

My own education history

B.S. in English (Truman State University); M.A. in Education-Elementary (Truman State University); Ph.D. in Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis (University of Missouri); Gifted/Talented coursework for certification (Drury University). Missouri teaching licenses in: Elementary Education & Gifted/Talented Education

Additional biographical information

Hello, I'm Heather. Otherwise known as Dr. H or Dr. Heather. I've done many things in my life but somehow they all involve educating in one form or another. Currently, I can be found day-to-day busy unschooling my daughter, developing resources for teachers to help lighten the load, and freelance writing when I can. For some self-care, something teachers are notoriously bad about, I read, take walks in the woods, create upcycled creations, or cuddle with our senior cat, Clyde. :)
