About the store
My main K-12 teaching experience is as the lead Gifted/Talented teacher for grades 2-8 in a rural Missouri district. There was no curriculum when I arrived so I developed all kinds of new units and lessons in many different subjects. While in college I taught at a Child Development Center for pre-schoolers and interned in a 3rd grade classroom. At the University of Missouri I taught courses in the Teacher Development Program as well as the Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis department. I taught courses on theory and philosophy as well as those implementing topics, ideas, and lessons in the classroom.

"Chitterchat" |Synonyms |Prelutsky Poem |No Prep! |Print & Digital |Halloween

Feline familiars and scatterbrained shrews. What's a poet to do?! "Chitterchat" by Jack Prelutsky is a great poem to build and challenge student vocabulary and practice word deciphering techniques. It also provides a witty resource for practicing and analyzing synonyms in a fun new way! Considering its focus on a witch and her cat familiar, it could also be a great resource around Halloween time. This is a great option for a: - mini-lesson, - self-led learning, - classroom discussion, - sm

Wizards and hamsters and insults, oh my! "I Told the Wizard to His Face" by Jack Prelutsky is a great poem to build and challenge student vocabulary and practice word deciphering techniques. Experience

Teaching style

My teaching style centers around the idea of teacher as facilitator. I utilize all kinds of different instruction techniques as a way to try to reach each student where they are and in ways they learn best. However, I also challenge students with differentiated instruction, questioning techniques, reflective activities, and/or projects that allow for options in showing what they've learned in their own way.

Awards & shining teacher moments

High Flyer Award for Outstanding Teaching (University of Missouri); Who's Who Among America's Teachers (x2); Invited Educator: NASA Earth-to-Orbit Curriculum Field Test & Symposium; Sigma Tau Delta (English) Honors Fraternity

My own education history

B.S. in English (Truman State University); M.A. in Education-Elementary (Truman State University); Ph.D. in Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis (University of Missouri); Gifted/Talented coursework for certification (Drury University). Missouri teaching licenses in: Elementary Education & Gifted/Talented Education

Additional biographical information

Hello, I'm Heather. Otherwise known as Dr. H or Dr. Heather. I've done many things in my life but somehow they all involve educating in one form or another. Currently, I can be found day-to-day busy unschooling my daughter, developing resources for teachers to help lighten the load, and freelance writing when I can. For some self-care, something teachers are notoriously bad about, I read, take walks in the woods, create upcycled creations, or cuddle with our senior cat, Clyde. :)
