About the store
Brian: I've had the opportunity to teach in 4 countries (US, Japan, Myanmar and Nepal) over the past two decades, and my students have ranged from 5 to 25 years old. I like to teach a mix of issues related to cultural perspectives, globalization, global citizenship and self-awareness. Currently I'm a volunteer teacher in eastern Nepal and regularly give educational seminars to students at all educational levels. Previously I worked in the field of study abroad at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the field of international admissions at Hawaii Pacific University, in the field of academic advising at American University, and as an English teacher in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.

Math and Food - Lesson 1
In this mouth-watering lesson, students will apply basic math skills such as addition, multiplication, division, percentage, and basic algebra to an exciting subject – food! Students will learn how to read nutrition labels, calculate how many calories there are in their favorite foods, the percent daily value of micro- and macronutrients, and ultimately how to make better decisions about what they eat.

Students will also be introduced to a cross-cultural dining scenario.

An Introduction to Gender Roles
This exercise will enable students to define “gender roles” and to differentiate between the biological and social characteristics that can be attributed to males and females.

Teaching style
Brian: As a geography lover, I like to tell my students that the only two significant differences between "us" and "them" are the two things everyone has: latitude and longitude. I strive to have an interactive classroom, with an emphasis on personal reflection and sharing, and I strongly prefer to combine both individual and group activities during every class meeting.

Gui and Brian: Co-presented a highly praised seminar titled "Preparing Students for Success Abroad by Building Self-Awareness" at the 2010 NAFSA Association of International Educators Annual Conference & Expo.
