About the store

Experience

The 2014-2015 school year will be my 5th as a Special Education Teacher. I'm also taking online master-level degree courses in Library and Information Science through Syracuse University in New York.

Teaching style

I prefer direct engagement in life experience activities and other educational concepts. This includes hands-on approach to lessons. However, I cannot say I'm fully integrated my teacher day into this teaching style, as I do some direct instruction and use worksheets on a regular basis. There's nothing wrong with that...but if you know of a better way...you better do it.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I have four years experience as a Special Education teacher, Pk-12, at a bush village in Alaska called Brevig Mission. I have skill sets with computers, working on the district's handbook for Special Education teachers, school test coordinator, lead teacher for the student response team, and coordinating a number of other projects school-wide. In my MLIS program at Syracuse University, I've had the privilege to travel to Italy and present the concept of "Sensory Storytelling" to over 40 coordinators from 16 European nations.

My own education history

B. of Science in Education from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma with a specialization in Mild/Moderate Disabilities. I also have Oklahoma certification in Severe/Profound Disabilities. Continuing Professional Development courses in Alaska EED Currently working on MLIS Degree through distance learning from Syracuse University

Additional biographical information

My school is off the road system in Alaska, and I travel down to Oklahoma several times a year to visit family. I am a Special Education teacher in the small village of Brevig Mission. I'm moving on my fifth year in teaching here. I enjoy the subsistence lifestyle here, such as hunting musk ox or caribou, fishing for salmon, berry picking, etc. I enjoy building Excel workbooks for teacher/school usage, with particular focus on design, ease of use, and useful information for the teacher. I have a number of Excel projects going on right now that include: Attendance, Behavior Tracking, Aide Scheduling, and more! See my blog @ "gmelvin.wordpress.com"
