As a K-12 teacher, she taught a variety of levels, from struggling to advanced readers She is a history buff, so her students read a lot of primary sources in her class. She has a Ph.D. in curriculum & instruction with specializations in literacy studies and educational psychology. <p>

Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Story Unit
Harrison Bergeron is an excellent short story to introduce students to a dystopian/utopian society. It can be used in conjunction with novels such as Orwell's 1984 or Animal Farm to give students another view of the type of society being illustrated in those novels.
This short story unit contains the following: a summary of the short story, vocabulary terms with definitions, pre/post reading questions, discussion points from the story, a during reading activity, extension activity suggestions

The Hobbit Study questions, sample quizzes, and activities
This is a unit I put together for my lower readers when we read The Hobbit together. The study guides are in two-column notes format, and there are also quizzes for the first few chapters and some word games that I created to go with the novel. I have also updated it to include answer keys for all the study guide questions and extension activities I developed for my advanced and gifted students. My students really enjoyed this & the study guides helped keep them all on track.

Elementary Grammar Project Directions & Rubric
This is a project I assigned to my middle school GATE students. They had to create a presentation that could be used by elementary teachers to teach about a grammar topic or rule, such as when to use a period, or what a noun is. They also had to include a hands-on activity for the elementary students. Afterward, my students were given the opportunity to go out and "model their lesson" in an elementary classroom.

Haiku is for Wimps! Poetry Unit
Tired of teaching the same old poetry? Looking for some forms to teach that will challenge your students while still making it fun? This unit has been used successfully with students in grades seven and eight. Students will learn to write three more advanced forms of poetry, including the terza rima, sestina, and villanelle.

Historical Poem Writing Project
After reading Paul Revere's Ride in class, I assign my students to pick an event from history and write their own poem about it. The poem has to include facts about the event. Students are allowed to present the poem as they wish - I have had wonderful posters, Power Point presentations, and even short movies turned in for this project. This project is a great way to incorporate research into a poetry unit.

Choose a topic research portfolio
This is a portfolio system that I put together for my students. They students choose a topic they are interested in & complete a series of projects throughout the year about their topic. There are 10 projects in this set, each with directions and a rubric.

80 Writing Prompts from 20 Quotations
In this packet you will find twenty different quotations, each with four writing prompts. I have included questions at a variety of levels. All involve some elements of critical thinking, and give students a chance to connect their own opinions and experiences to the given statements.
Quotations included from: Shakespeare, Poe, Helen Keller, and Aristotle among others.

Animal Testing Research Presentation Instructions & Rubric
This is a research project I did with my GATE class, and the students really enjoyed it. Before beginning, we had done a unit on evaluating the reliability of sources, so they were ready to tackle a controversial topic.
This download includes the directions for the project as well as the rubric for grading. Students are graded onthe clarity, persuasiveness, and creativity of their finished product.
