Color-By-Numbers: Estimating Products

To help spice up the practice of estimating products, I've created some color-by-number sheets for my students. I like to come up with stupid little pictures because they can't predict the final picture. If you'd like, you could use your own coloring sheet and just add my numbers. Not only is it just a few problems, but it provides an answer bank, which motivates the students to keep trying and correct their errors. This allows for independent and station work. Honestly, some students do not

I needed an end-of-year project that incorporated the review of important topics--multiplication, division, factors, and fractions. I came up with a basic role-playing game to combine review and superheroes. (Some teachers are geeks, too.) Although it seems that there's a long build-up with several steps, the students thoroughly enjoy each assignment.

On these 8 sheets, you'll find geometry figures and definitions. I've included types of triangles, types of quadrilaterals, other polygons, types of solids, transformations, and other geometric figures and terms, such as congruent, faces, and vertices. They can be used as a memory game, a review station, or game cards. I prefer to copy them onto card stock.

Initially, I designed this lesson for adding/multiplying decimal numbers, and it's fine for that; however, I've started using it toward the end of the year as a lesson on basic spreadsheet formulas. As an end-of-the-year project, it allows the students to complete Internet research, which they enjoy, and to create an online slideshow project, which they also enjoy.

Collectible card games are crazy popular. So, I thought I'd try to capture their interest and imagination. This activity is great for the end-of-the-year. It allows for creativity, math review, descriptive writing, and alliteration.
