Students get confused when confronted with negative and rational exponents. At a bare minimum, they associate negative exponents with fractions and rational exponents have fractions. In this activity, students are forced to consider various permutations of negative signs, negative exponents and rational exponents all together. PointKeeper is a spreadsheet-based system for tracking extra credit points for students. I wanted a system that was easy to update, that would allow me to give kids lots of opportunities for extra credit, that kids could track themselves and that didn't require multiple entries into the district-based gradebook system. PointKeeper is the result of my desire and efforts.
