For younger students use guess and check. For older students you can encourage them to make equations and use substitutions/elimination to solve.

Entrepreneur Project : 5th Grade Math
In this project students are able to work on multiplying decimals, work with fractions, create their own "restaurant", work with area of a given space, and convert units from yards to feet. This is a great item to use for grades 5-9th.
