My students really struggled with two-step word problems. I came up with this 15-page resource to guide them through the steps of breaking down the problem into manageable pieces.
The students begin by filling out, "What the answer looks like" using their words. For example, they would write, "Ducks in the pond + new ducks - scared ducks = total ducks left in the pond." Then, they move on to simply plug in the numbers and solve the problem!
This has done wonders to help my students break-down
This game helps students master 3.MD.B.4 without even realizing they're learning.
The game board consists of a box with 21 lines. The students play with a partner and each partner uses a different colored pen or pencil. The students label each tick mark beginning with 0 and moving up in increments of 1/4. On their turn, each student can choose to write one number or two numbers. The student who gets to the end and writes "5" is the winner! See the pictures for an example of how to play.
After
Go on a quest to master two-step word problems! This cooperative game encourages students to work together, rather than compete.
The game includes 30 two-step word problems in 3 formats: Powerpoint, PDF, and easy-print task cards. The students play with a partner: if they both get the problem correct they move two spaces, if one partner get the problem correct they move one space, if neither gets the problem correct they do not move at all.
Answer key is included!

This is an example of a letter I gave to my students before they took their standardized tests. The product is fully editable and you can customize the letter to each student or simply use the easy print-and-go version.
Standardized tests are so stressful for our students. It is important that we remind them to focus on the things that matter most: they're individual, hard-working children who are loved.
I hope this freebie helps your students reduce their stress in the same way it has helped
