Do your kiddos do sustained silent reading?
Use this log to keep track of student progress AND practice their questioning skills.
Included in this is a SSR log and 9 task cards. Print them on colored paper and put them on a binder ring. Once students are finished silently reading, have them fill out their log and answer one question. Next time students read, have them answer a different question. Put it in their INB to keep it all in one place :)

A great real world writing activity before students write their own review!
Students will look at REAL (and funny) poorly written reviews to evaluate them and figure out what was done wrong. Then, students will brainstorm what needs to be done to improve them. By correcting bad reviews, students should be able to better write their own.
There are multiple ways to do this activity - individual, partner, around the room, group, table, etc. You pick! :)

Use De Bono's six hats to get your students to think deeper about the text. These hats have the students think from one perspective assigned to them, in this case, their hat color. When students start discussing in their group, they must respond from the one perspective.
This gets students to think creatively and challenges them to look closely at the text to support their perspective.
