Area of a Donut / Area of an Annulus
To practice finding area of a circle, students can find the area of a donut! 10 problems to master finding area of a circle and understand composite area. The first 8 problems have work space for students to show the area of the larger circle, the area of the smaller circle, and the difference. The last 2 problems have space for work, but students need to show their own steps. Keywords: composite area, compound area, annulus, donut, doughnut, area of circles, pi, test prep.

Hook the students with the song "Johnny Johnny, Yes Papa." It is a song about a boy sneaking sugar from a sugar jar. Johnny and his friends are transferring sugar from one sugar jar to another, and trying to sneak sugar in the process. *This is not my song, but I am providing a link to it on YouTube. Although the song is intended for little kids, middle school students love it! Students will find the volume of each cylinder, then compare the amount of sugar to the amount in the original jar.
