Pi Day Activity for Middle School Math or Upper Elementary

Created by
Try-Angle Math
Celebrate Pi Day by making Pi City. Students create a bar graph using the digits of pi. Students can cut it out to create a cityscape. This comes with a paper and digital version! The digital version includes video directions for shading in cells. Bonus: Students analyze the digits of pi! They find equations and palindromes hidden in the digits! Also check out my new hands on paperclip activity to learn about where pi comes from! For more Pi Day resources, you can find this in my discou

Graphing Equations in Slope-Intercept Form!Students are given 12 lines. They graph each line and name the animal that the line passes through. They also write the coordinates for each animal. This helps students practice going up or down first when using slope, and over first when identifying coordinates.

Given a graph, students identify the slope and y-intercept, and write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form. Students use the slope and y-intercept for color in the picture. 12 graphs in all.

Graphing Coordinate Pairs Riddle

Students locate 27 points on a coordinate plane and write down the letter at that point to reveal a secret phrase. Here is another riddle, to review graphing points after you teach slope. My students always get confused that they go up first for slope, but over first for a coordinate. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Graphing-Coordinate-Pairs-Riddle-Shrek-Theme-4749006

Point-Slope Form RIDDLE

Students are given 20 equations in point-slope form. They need to determine the point and slope. They draw lines using the point and slope, and write down the letter each line passes through to reveal a silly math phrase. Students will need to be very precise when plotting points, but can use a ruler to help draw straight lines. Graphing Coordinate Pairs "Picture" - Secret Phrase

Created by
Try-Angle Math
Students plot 41 points on a coordinate plane, and connect the dots as they work to reveal a secret phrase instead of a secret picture. This can be used to introduce graphing points, or to review once you teach slope, since many students forget if they need to go over or up first.

Teaching style

It's my goal to create middle school math lessons that reduce math anxiety and encourage students to try. I want every student engaged in math and to feel successful. If you are looking to increase student engagement, especially with students who "aren't good at math," I want to support you on their journey to success!
