This unit has been written to provide information and activities to help children understand about flowers, bees, pollination and the production of honey. The unit is in two parts. ‘Worksheets and Activities’ and ‘Planning and Links’. Although the unit has a science bias there are suggestions for literacy, drama, art and maths. These resources should enable educators to run a comprehensive study on the honeybee and its important role. This could provide a whole term of study and activity. I have

Chromatography is always a fun activity for children of all ages. This 'Detective' challenge can serve both as a stand-alone activity or as a part of a wider investigation into the science of chromatography. It is simple enough to organise in the classroom or can be completed with more scientific apparatus in a lab.

A story linking Science and Literacy. Forcythe is a clown who wants to be a star in the circus. As he considers the different acts he could try the story lends itself to discussion about various forces such as gravity, air resistance and friction. At the end of the story Forcythe realises that making children happy is the way he shines light in people's lives. There is a free air resistance worksheet that links well with Forcythe's baggy pants slowing his fall! Also the activity on 'Centre of G

An easy to make 3-d insect model using basic materials. Simple questions guide the children to observe carefully and identify that an insect body has three parts; head, thorax, abdomen. They realise that the wings and legs are attached to the thorax and that there are six legs that are jointed. This activity could be followed with 'Green screening the Easy Way' to make fun pictures with the models that could lead to some great story writing.

This is messy, fun...and such a worthwhile activity! It is best to get the children to bring in the basic wooden frame from home...a drawer, box or bits of old wood nailed together are all fine. Natural materials can be in plastic boxes near a central workstation with hot glue guns. We used pine cones, twigs, straw, shells and leaves... The children became so involved...even imagining staircases for the wee critters. Completing the booklet exposed the children to the design process. (If short o

About the store

Experience

UK, NZ, International School in SE Asia. Specialist teacher of Maths, Science and Art as well as classroom teacher to Year 4 to 8 (8 to 13 years).

Teaching style

"Would I like to learn this...would I be inspired?" 'Growth Mindset'. Learning is like building bridges in the brain. (Ref. Sir Robert Winston crossing the ravine) The children have not 'yet' learnt a skill or gained an understanding but with thoughtful guidance they will begin to. Love linking literacy, art and drama with Maths and Science. Physical action and expression is important. Firm but fair teacher with high expectations of work quality and behaviour. We have fun in the class but we know where the 'line' is. Humour and time to listen are important. Each child has a strength which once identified and nurtured can give them confidence to grow in other areas.

Additional biographical information

Wife to another teacher! We have an adult daughter and son. We love to travel and try new experiences. (We have hiked in the Abel Tasman National Park and learnt to surf in Hawaii...even stood up 4 times!) I enjoy walking, gardening, reading and being creative.
