This lesson is designed for students to work with a group to design a replica of the Washington Monument using pasta, straws, and other raw materials to withstand a simulated earthquake. The lesson ties into real-world events, engages students in productive teamwork (with real-world group roles), open-ended exploration, and uses the engineering design process to research and develop a solution. The lesson also ties in Language Arts standards by having student’s research their own information.

Additional biographical information

I have a passion for education! Hard-working, adventure-seeking, outdoor-loving are the best three ways to describe me! I love to travel and experience new places. I love to share these experiences with my students and show them how STEM concepts are found and applied in the real world. In my free time, I enjoy reading, learning as much as I can about how to be a better teacher, running, kayaking, hiking, and cooking.
