About the store
I have been teaching for over ten years now--from private schools abroad to all-boys charter schools and GT programs in the States, I've been lucky enough to teach a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds. I've taught everything from 7th grade to university. While others may find it overwhelming or boring, I've always loved the curriculum development part of teaching. I love to see how I can make sure the kids are engaged, learning, and challenged.

This seven slide presentation is a great way to introduce the novel Frankenstein. It asks students to examine fears within their own society before moving on to analyze the fears and themes represented within the novel. The final slide (slide 7, not pictured in preview), also asks students to create their own societal monster and to analyze how they see that monster physically represented.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner: Tableaus and Intro to Frankenstein

This is a multi-day activity I use with my class when introducing Romanticism and Frankenstein. The first part of the presentation explains the background to the poem, then it asks students to do a guided close read, and then turn their close reads into tableaus to present to the class. It's a fun and engaging way to connect students with a difficult text. It also serves as a great intro to Frankenstein because of the discussion it creates, but also because the poem is directly referenced many

Questioning for Socratic Seminars

When I used to do socratic seminars, I often would write the questions for my students. I'd have them write notes for the questions in advance and then come to the seminar with those notes. But I found that the conversation from that became predictable and too guided, so I decided to switch it up by having the students write the questions. However, students often don't know how to develop thoughtful questions yet, so this lesson is meant to help them do just that. I use these slides the day bef

I use these slides when introducing Pride and Prejudice. We examine assumptions have about it being just a "romance" and how to look at it, instead, as commentary of gender restrictions. The slides discuss background information on the author, historical significance of the subject, adaptations of Austen's works, characters, themes, motifs, and how to look at the novel as satire.

Hello! This presentation is meant to be paired with the other AP/ACT/SAT Vocabulary activities found in my store. There you can find other vocabulary resources, such as weekly and monthly quizzes, cumulative exam, study tool, etc.  I usually give my kids the 8 weekly words at the beginning of each week–not including weeks with odd scheduling or a Monday holiday. (I find that the 20 weeks gets me through most of the year when omitting those odd weeks.) These are the slides I use for those introdu

What type of writer are you?

Whenever I start to teach writing, I like for students to first consider how they write. This quick and easy power point has students think about what they do when they sit down to write: what approach do they take? what blocks do they run into? what strengths do they have? This approach that I began using about seven years ago puts students on a scale--not just one style against the other. It examines what they may struggle with or do well based on their approach and then tips for future writi

Teaching style

I am passionate about what I do and try to bring that passion into the classroom. I really want students to be engaged and challenged, but most of all, I want them to step outside their box and comfort zone. I value diversity and I try to act as I preach and bring diversity into the classroom--through literature, through learning styles, and through my approach. I want students to see perspectives beyond theirs and to learn empathy through the stories of others.

My own education history

My parents were in the Army, so I moved around a lot as a kid, which meant moving schools pretty often. It's hard to stay consistent in your learning when you don't go to the same school for more than two years at most. But, luckily, I found a love of learning through reading. I attended East Carolina University for undergraduate and graduate school. I have a BS in English Education and a MA in English. I have a license for 7-12 ELA, as well as a license as a Gifted and Talented Specialist.
