Art Rules Poster

Art can be "anything" and students seem thirsty for the same kinds of rules and guidelines they receive in other subjects. So I adapted a few "rules." This is an 11x17 poster design of "art rules" from renowned teaching artist and nun, Sister Corita Kent. This could also be shrunk into a handout.

Confidence to Create Journal

Sometimes creative work can make us feel vulnerable and because of this, individuals hold back from making their best, most powerful work. This is a booklet/journal I created for a healing arts class. I noticed many people say things like "I'm not artistic or creative" "I can't do that" and are just simply scared to get started on a creative work. It includes a "license to create" and questions for reflection and critical thinking. It is purposefully very minimal, to allow for personalization

Experience

- 5 years teaching art classes as a teaching artist at Twin Cities art centers, Minnetonka Center for the Arts & Articulture - Multiple art teaching residencies with local high schools and youth organizations in the twin cities (since 2012) - some healing arts including teaching women in recovery and starting an adult art studio and program at a homeless shelter - 2 years (4 semesters) teaching a 3000 level Media Design class at the University of Minnnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Teaching style

My MFA thesis research is making as a methodology. Therefore, I do many activities and object-based inquiry and learning because for me, doing leads to knowing. I believe in teaching not just the subject matter, but teaching students how to learn. I am open, flexible, and encourage students to define their own problems. Creative making is a design process through which one learns.
