Visual Elements and Compositional Principles

This is a slideshow that introduces, names, and explains the visual elements and compositional principles. There are two slides for students to practice identifying these, as well as an exercise at the end where the instructor assigns whichever image they wish to students in groups. The group has time to analyze the image and identify elements and principles before making a short, informal presentation to the class where they explain their findings.

Experience

- 5 years teaching art classes as a teaching artist at Twin Cities art centers, Minnetonka Center for the Arts & Articulture - Multiple art teaching residencies with local high schools and youth organizations in the twin cities (since 2012) - some healing arts including teaching women in recovery and starting an adult art studio and program at a homeless shelter - 2 years (4 semesters) teaching a 3000 level Media Design class at the University of Minnnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Teaching style

My MFA thesis research is making as a methodology. Therefore, I do many activities and object-based inquiry and learning because for me, doing leads to knowing. I believe in teaching not just the subject matter, but teaching students how to learn. I am open, flexible, and encourage students to define their own problems. Creative making is a design process through which one learns.

I am also a practicing printmaker and designer: I do illustrations and etchings, editorial design (magazines and books), typography and layout design.
