In this activity, students will make predictions about which U.S. state they believe is the most at risk for various natural disasters. They will then use devices and explore the FEMA national risk index map to discover which states are truly at risk for certain disasters. Students will then research and produce a mitigation plan for a state and disaster of their choice. I love using the FEMA map resource in class and kids tend to love exploring it.
Students are tasked with choosing a communicable disease of their choice and personifying their disease into a villain / criminal profile. A great digital activity or printed activity. A list of communicable diseases with hyperlinks to resources is provided.
This is a very engaging lab that gets kids hands on experience with growing plants in the classroom. I did this with 7th graders during our life science unit. We grew tomatoes, zinnias, pole beans and cilantro in the window sills for several weeks. We used small bathroom cups for seed starters and I used printer box lids as trays to hold all the cups. Later on I had the students bring in recyclables like 2 liter bottles and they built planters to put their grown seedlings in. Science Stand
