Description

Plan a Winter Wonderland Party with your students! Differentiated multiplication project! Third and Fourth grade math project with Digital project option included! Google Slides versions included! Winter Math! Holiday Math!

Brr! It's cold outside! Have some fun with your students this winter by giving them the chance to plan a Winter Wonderland Party using their multiplication and division skills!

Using the Project Based Learning approach, this project reinforces multiplication and division fluency as well as single and multi-step story problem solving strategies! Scaffolds learning the problem-solving process through story problem graphic organizers!

Multiplication and Division Fluency! Use for Math Centers, Early Finishers, Small Group Instruction or Purposeful Practice! Plan a Winter Wonderland Party is perfect for third grade and fourth grade students! Realistic application problems in a fun and engaging project-based learning activity!

Students choose the number of guests to invite to the party so they can do the same project again and again and the answers will be different depending on the number of guests they invite!

This project is aligned to standards 3.OA.A.3, 3.OA.C.7, 3.OA.D.8, 3.NBT.A. & 3.MD.A.1. This is a fun and engaging project where students get to plan their own Winter Wonderland Party! There are 5 parts to the project including sending invitations, planning decorations, food and drink and games, as well as finding the total cost at the end. There are 15 total questions in this project, as well as a BONUS two extension pages! Some are single-step and some are multi-step problems similar to a math task.

There are 2 versions of the project, designed to be differentiated for your class and to help scaffold students towards independent problem solving.

  • Problem Solving Support: The first version includes story problem solving graphic organizers for each problem to help scaffold your students towards solving the single and multi-step story problems. This version is great for your students that need to practice fluency and need support making story problems more accessible.
  • Independent Problem Solving: The second version does not include the graphic organizers, so students need to interpret the problems themselves. This provides a more challenging opportunity for students to determine the steps to solve each problem as well as which operation to use. This is great for your students who are fluent in their facts but need to work on interpreting story problems independently.

Each version of the project includes:

  • A 14 page project (with 5 different parts, invite guests, decorations, food & drink, games and total cost). Includes a real recipe for Snow Cones as well as fun winter game ideas!
  • 2 pages of project extensions
  • A printable and digital version of the project
  • An answer key (note: the answer key includes most answers but does not include every answer because some answers depend on student choices).

Skills included in this project are:

  • Multiplication and division fact fluency
  • Single step story problems
  • Multi-step contextual problems including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Interpreting factors, products, dividends, divisors and quotients
  • Solving contextual problems involving the four operations including interpreting remainders (there are only a few remainders to interpret, so it is an introduction to remainders, appropriate for third grade).
  • Multiplying one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10
  • Solve contextual problems involving multiplicative comparison (there is one multiplicative comparison problem included and it is in the format of a multiplication table--so it is appropriate for third grade).

If your students enjoyed my Circus Party project, they will LOVE this Winter Wonderland Party Project!

DIGITAL FILES NOW INCLUDED! GOOGLE SLIDES LINKS INCLUDED! *ZIP file includes PDF project file with answer key as well as PowerPoint digital versions of the project with "type answer here" boxes.

I hope you enjoy this engaging multiplication and division project!
