This Google Slides place value lesson for fourth grade math teaches students strategies for rounding numbers through the hundred thousands place.

The lesson:

  • uses real world examples and number lines to build conceptual understanding of rounding as a way of estimating approximate answers
  • explains the rounding rules and walks students through several examples step by step
  • includes a helpful visual anchor chart called the "Rounding Roller Coaster"
  • provides 9 practice problems (just click to reveal step-by-step solutions) with access to a free printable worksheet (page 20).

This lesson deals with up to 6 digit numbers, making it perfect for 4th grade common core (CCSS) standard 4.NBT.A.3.
