Description

For this activity, students will practice simplifying rational expressions by adding or subtracting. Some expressions require factoring before they can be simplified.

Task Cards #1-4 have like denominators

Task Cards #5-12 have unlike denominators with 1 or 2 factors in the denominator.

Task Cards #13-16 have unlike denominators with 2 or 3 factors in the denominator

Task Cards #17-20 have unlike denominators with 1, 2 or 3 factors in the denominator and may have a leading coefficient greater than 1 to factor.

Adding & Subtracting rational expressions are some of the hardest concepts to master in Algebra 2. This activity provided a lot of extra great practice for my students. I plan to use it every year! A GREAT purchase!

I love how task cards provide an easy way to differentiate in class. Students worked at their own pace and I was able to assess mastery and support those who needed more help or acceleration very easily.

Rewrite simple rational expressions in different forms; write 𝘢(𝘹)/𝘣(𝘹) in the form 𝘲(𝘹) + 𝘳(𝘹)/𝘣(𝘹), where 𝘢(𝘹), 𝘣(𝘹), 𝘲(𝘹), and 𝘳(𝘹) are polynomials with the degree of 𝘳(𝘹) less than the degree of 𝘣(𝘹), using inspection, long division, or, for the more complicated examples, a computer algebra system.
Understand that rational expressions form a system analogous to the rational numbers, closed under addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by a nonzero rational expression; add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational expressions.
