WHAT'S INCLUDED? (PRINT AND DIGITAL)

Game 1: Solve the Word Problem

Students solve the word problem by labeling the sides, showing their work, and writing the answer.

Game 2: Same Area or Same Perimeter?

Students label the rectangles, find the area and perimeter of each, and put a circle on top of what is the same.

Game 3: Missing Sides

Students label the area/perimeter and side lengths. Then, they show their work to find the answer of the missing side length.

Game 4: Circle the Keywords

Students circle the keywords to show what kind of word problem it is. Then, they solve to find the answer.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT:

There are 11 problems included in each of the 4 games (total of 44 questions).

Digitally: The first problem is always an example for students so they know what to do. I would recommend completing 5 questions during your lesson together and assigning the other 5 for students to complete independently.

Print: Print the task cards out and put them in a math center. Have students record answers on the recording sheet provided. Students can use the self-checking answer key to check their work. You can choose between the color and black and white option.

Aligns with Common Core 3.MD.8:

  • Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 3.7B: determine the perimeter of a polygon or a missing length when given perimeter and remaining side lengths in problems

This aligns with 4th Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 4.5C: use models to determine the formulas for the perimeter of a rectangle (l + w + l + w or 2l + 2w), including the special form for perimeter of a square (4s) and the area of a rectangle (l x w)
  • TEKS 4.5D: solve problems related to perimeter and area of rectangles where dimensions are whole numbers

This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.GR.2.1 Explore area as an attribute of a two-dimensional figure by covering the figure with unit squares without gaps or overlaps. Find areas of rectangles by counting unit squares.
  • MA.3.GR.2.2 Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths using a visual model and a multiplication formula.
  • MA.3.GR.2.3 Solve mathematical and real-world problems involving the perimeter and area of rectangles with whole-number side lengths using a visual model and a formula.

Awesome ! Awesome resource!! My students were struggling with word problems and I came across this magnificent resource. It gave my students a chance to practice with area and perimeter but in word problems form. My students had to read the word problems and figure it if they were going to perform the area or perimeter. They had to pick out key word to determine if it was the area or perimeter. It was very helpful for my students because they truly struggle with word problems. Thank you for the resource.
