Description

Check in check out journal for elementary students.

It is a great tool for both self-reflection and relationship building! I have used this journal with students in my resource room to support monthly progress monitoring for IEP goals, with Response to Intervention (RTI) Tier II students, in small group, and I have adapted it for whole group use.

Individual Check In/Check Out students: Identify students who you feel need a little extra love! Ask students to check in with you in the mornings (have them complete the top “Check In” portion of the form) and to check out with you at the end of the day (have them complete the self-evaluation “Check Out” portion of the form). Upon completion of the thirty days support students in filling out the Self-Reflection Questions and use the Questions for Discussion and Reflection to facilitate conversations.

Small Group/Conflict resolution: Hold a twenty minute group dedicated to increasing a culture of respect and understanding among students. Give students ten minutes of quiet time to respond to the daily prompts. Ask students to share their answers and facilitate a structured discussion including questions, comments, and connections between students. Close with each student completing the self-evaluation “Check Out” portion of the document and assigning an emotion face the quality of their day. Upon completion of the thirty days have students complete the Self-Reflection Questions and compare their experiences.

Whole Group: Use this journal as morning work for your whole class as a way to build individual relationships. At the end of the day have students fill out their self-evaluation tool and collaboratively discuss strategies to increase the value of their days. Use the Questions for Teacher Lead Reflection and Discussion to facilitate your conversations.

This intervention can help empower students to take ownership of their behavior and support the development of meaningful relationships. Here is a look at exactly what is included:
