Description
Equivalent numerical expressions, exponents, and order of operations are just a few of the concepts that are practiced on a daily basis when you incorporate 'Math Dates' into your classroom routine.
- The Math Dates list, calendar cards, and number puzzles help your middle school students think about math in different ways as they increase their math flexibility!
The basic idea of Math Date calendar numbers is to use the date to include a little extra math in the day, reinforce math concepts, and possibly use as extensions or enrichment.
- Each part of the date is written as an expression.
- For example, January 1, 2023, could be: 1^10 • 3^0 / (7 + 2) ÷ 9 / 8 - (-15).
- I’ve found it helpful to repeat tricky facts in the dates, so students see them over and over. For example, many (most?) students believe the number 51 is prime. However, after seeing 51/3 as the expression for 17 during 2017, they became better at remembering that 51 is actually divisible!
Using dates as mathematical expressions is an easy way to expose students to new math rules (like cubing or cube roots or exponent rules, etc) or review concepts that students have learned (like squaring or order of operations!).
- As the year progresses, these expressions include multiplication and division of fractions, decimal operation expressions, absolute value, negative integers, and more.
Using the calendar math dates:
- Some days the date might just be there on the board for students to observe and mentally note that the expression is equal to the numbers in the date (this is even great in a non-math class!).
- Other days you might use the date as a warm-up and ask students to show you their solutions
- This is a great way to address equivalent expressions and MANY other concepts as a type of spiral review throughout the entire year!
- The number puzzles can be used in math centers, for fast finishers, or for sub days.
- The calendar cards could also be used as flashcards throughout the year for quick practice at the beginning or end of class OR for different math games.
This Daily Math Dates Warm-Ups bundle includes the files for EACH of the 12 months:
1) PDF of date lists for teacher (for every day of the month, including weekends:-)
2) Student calendar
3) Calendar cards for the month (month and day)
4) Year calendar cards for 2025 to 2030 (10 per year)
5 )'Math Dates in History' number puzzle (12 puzzles in all)
PLUS 10 “Mixed Math Dates Puzzles” – 5 Cross Number Puzzles and 5 Find a Number puzzles. These puzzles each use 2018 dates from all of the months, which makes them a little more challenging than the monthly puzzles.
In addition to the monthly files, there's a BONUS zip file of the August 2017 through June 2018 dates. EACH of those months includes:
1) A list of the dates for the month
2) A Cross Number puzzle (11 puzzles total)
3) A Find a Number puzzle (11 puzzles total)

What teachers are saying about this resource:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️“I LOVE the variety of problems that these have on them. I use for both my 7th, 8th and Applied Math class. I assign it at the beginning of the month to be due at the end of the month. They can work on it when they finish class work early or when they have study. There is always math to work on!”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"My kids never ask me the date anymore :D They also ask about new math skills they don't know when they see them pop up (I teach 6-8) and it's fun to see them try to think through it!"
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I like how I can incorporate teaching new concepts while using this resource daily."
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"My kids LOVE coming in and discussing how to solve these for the date!"
