Describing Igneous Rocks Worksheet

Students will learn how extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks form and get hands-on practice at telling extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks apart!

This 3-page worksheet is to be used for notes and a hands-on activity. It includes a section for notes, a data collection chart, and conclusion questions.

Students will first review how igneous rocks form and the differences between extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks. They will then take turns observing samples of igneous rocks and, using what they learned, identify the rocks as either extrusive or intrusive. Students are asked to back up their answers with evidence and make further connections to the material with a set of conclusion questions.

Teachers should have access to six samples of extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks to do the activity with students.
