Describing Metamorphic Rocks Worksheet

Students will learn how metamorphic rocks form and get hands-on practice at telling if a metamorphic rock is foliated or non-foliated!

This 3-page worksheet is to be used for notes and a hands-on activity. It includes a section for notes, a data collection chart, and conclusion questions.

Students will first review how metamorphic rocks form and what “foliation” means. They will then take turns observing samples of metamorphic rocks and, using what they learned, identify the rocks as either foliated or non-foliated. Students are asked to back up their answers with evidence and make further connections to the material with a set of conclusion questions.

Teachers should have access to six samples of foliated and non-foliated metamorphic rocks to do the activity with students.

Great inquiry lesson. I was able to tailor this to my high schoolers but they had fun with it.
