Description

Cut, fold, and paperclip a paper to drop as a spinning helicopter. Create a second helicopter, make one change, and compare how they spin as they fall to the floor.

This common, surprising activity uses simple materials. I pulled it from Pushes and Pulls and added resources to make it easy for you to share this activity with families.

Do you need your resources to be available online?

  • Import the Word™ documents into your online classroom. If needed, easily edit the documents.
  • Import the activity videos, audio and video recordings.

Do you need to create a work packet to send home?

  • Print the independent work packet that includes: the How To worksheet, helicopters to cut and fold, a short text, and suggestions for extensions!

Are you concerned about students understanding the text?

  • We created videos that highlight the text for the worksheets in both English and Spanish and the short text, also in English or Spanish, as it is read to students.

What if students don't have a printer to print the helicopters?

  • A video explains how to draw a helicopter at home.
  • Watch short videos showing dropping one and then two helicopters.

A web page created just my this product has resources that are kid friendly, easy to read, often with activity videos, and few if any distracting ads.

It's difficult to suggest a duration as it depends on the options you choose. If you choose all four options, this could be four science sessions or more!

I have dozens of products you might consider for distance learning and force. This product was reformatted from Pushes and Pulls and additional resources added to make it ideal as an independent activity or distance learning. I combined Pendulums, Resonant Pendulums, Paper Helicopters into a ♥ bundle♥ of all three products to save you $$!

NGSS3-PS2-1
Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. Examples could include an unbalanced force on one side of a ball can make it start moving; and, balanced forces pushing on a box from both sides will not produce any motion at all. Assessment is limited to one variable at a time: number, size, or direction of forces. Assessment does not include quantitative force size, only qualitative and relative. Assessment is limited to gravity being addressed as a force that pulls objects down.
