Description

Dividing fractions and mixed numbers is the focus of these math wheel notes. Use this engaging note-taking format to introduce or review fraction division.

  • Students take notes, use color to help with memory, and complete practice problems found around the wheel.

What is a math doodle wheel? A math doodle wheel is a type of graphic organizer where students can:

  • Take notes inside the math wheel
  • Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
  • Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
  • Color the background pattern

Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year as a resource/study tool.

  • The wheels are excellent for reviewing concepts as part of your test prep.

This resource has two different wheels, using different methods:

  • 1st wheel outlines the steps of multiplying by the reciprocal
  • 2nd wheel outlines how to divide fractions by using common denominators
  • I teach both methods so students know that both ways exist, and so they can become proficient using both.

This dividing fractions resource includes:

1) THREE versions of each of the 2 options/methods of the student wheel

  • ‘Open’ for students to write notes (this version is most flexible, space-wise. There aren’t very many suggested notes to write, but you can add more if you’d like).
  • ‘Fill-in’ notes, to help control student use of space: there are also fraction bars on the page to help guide use of space
  • Pre-filled notes; fraction bars are on this version also; answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this version

Each version comes with a patterned background and no pattern in the background.

2) Teacher keys/wheels with completed notes and examples

3) Colored samples of the wheels

4) PowerPoint file with 4 editable templates ~ you can add text to make your own wheels (for classroom use only - not commercial use).

Each section of the dividing fractions notes wheel outlines a step of the fraction division process:

Multiplying by Reciprocal:

1) Convert to improper fractions

2) Rewrite as multiplication

3) Cross out

4) Multiply numerators; multiply denominators

5) Simplify

Using Common Denominators:

1) Convert to improper fractions

2) Find common denominators

3) Create a new fraction, with the numerator of the 1st fraction as the answer's numerator and the numerator of the 2nd fraction as the answer's denominator

4) Simplify

Features of this easy-to-use resource:

1) Notes and examples in each section: there are two examples included in each step/section. (These examples are the same on both wheels, so students can see that they get the same answer using either method.)

2) Guided or independent practice: 8 problems in the pattern around the circle (same problems on both wheels)

3) Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows, however they like.

Coloring the background:

  • Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time….coloring the background could be an ‘early finisher’ activity, center activity, homework, etc.
  • Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave sections white.
  • Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines in another.
  • This coloring part is just a chance to be creative and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide.

What teachers are saying about this resource:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I really enjoy the Math Wheels layout, in general. It is a great one-pager that keeps students focused as they have to move the wheel around to fill it in, get to color as they go, and then wraps up with some practice problems. I've been using them for a few years, and this was another great addition. Thank you!”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Love the two types of wheels and my kids loved them too!”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Students and I are in love with all of the math wheels. The students pull the math wheels out before they pull out any other notes or resources.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This was a great resource to use during a demonstration lesson in 6th grade :)”

I really like these doodle wheels! As a visual learner that loved doodling on my math pages growing up, I find this resource very engaging. My students enjoyed it as well and I found them referencing it quite often.

Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, create a story context for (2/3) ÷ (3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient; use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3) ÷ (3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (𝘢/𝘣) ÷ (𝘤/𝘥) = 𝘢𝘥/𝘣𝘤.) How much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 3/4-cup servings are in 2/3 of a cup of yogurt?
