Description

This resource provides students an opportunity to practice combining like terms, utilizing the distributive property, and solving equation with variables on both sides by analyzing questions that have already been solved incorrectly. After finding the error, the students must explain in words what happened. Then they must solve the problem correctly. Feel free to click on the preview to see the types of errors that students must analyze.

This resource would be great to have students do with partners, as a warm-up, a review before a quiz, as a station activity, an exit ticket, or for homework.

This product contains ten incorrectly solved problems.

I used this resource a little differently. I want my students to talk about and explain their thought process when solving problems. I ran each question on a blank paper and then put the answers up one row at a time - including the mistake. With this resource - Each kid answers the first question. Then I complete it step by step and they say, "I agree with (distributing, combining like terms, etc) because that is the first thing to do for this equation and it was done correctly." OR "I disagree with this step because you forgot to multiply (or whatever).

Making error analysis questions is such a pain, so I bought some! Great way to practice this heavily tested skill. I used parts of this in my lessons because it's almost too much to do in a class period.

Solve linear equations in one variable.
Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form 𝘹 = 𝘢, 𝘢 = 𝘢, or 𝘢 = 𝘣 results (where 𝘢 and 𝘣 are different numbers).
Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.
