Description

FREE Earth Day Making Ten Capture 4 Math Game gives first graders engaging practice with combinations for 10 through a strategy-based partner game. Students roll a die, solve a making ten problem, and strategically choose where to mark the game board to capture four in a row or block an opponent. This Earth Day Capture 4 math game is ideal for first grade math centers, partner work, and small-group instruction while promoting math talk, problem solving, and critical thinking.

Why it matters
Making ten supports number sense and addition fluency. As students compose and decompose numbers to make ten, they also develop a clear understanding of the meaning of the equal sign as a relationship between quantities.

How it helps
Unlike games of chance, this Capture 4 game requires purposeful decision-making. Students think ahead, evaluate options, and explain their choices, strengthening reasoning, critical thinking, and partner discussion.

Ways to use

  • First grade math center partner game
  • Small-group or targeted instruction for making ten
  • Early finisher or intervention practice

What’s included

  • Earth Day Capture 4 game board for making ten
  • Student instruction card
  • Low-prep setup (ten-sided die required)

This low-prep Earth Day math game builds combinations for 10 through meaningful strategy and discussion—no busywork, no luck-based play.
