The weeks before winter break and after are very exciting for students as they look forward to, and share stories from their winter holiday celebrations. It can be hard to find math resources that are aligned to the standards and also keep students engaged during this exciting time which is why I made these resources. The word problems in this resource all lend themselves to visual models and are very helpful for teaching other problem-solving strategies such as labeling and finding the unknown.

The word problems in both resources are all about the non-religious traditions at various winter holiday celebrations. Holidays included in the word problems are Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Las Posadas and Chinese New Year. Each story problem includes a brief explanation of the holiday.

The story problems and project focus on whole number and decimal multiplication and division, as well as addition/subtraction and mixed-operation story problems. They also include measurement conversion.

Description of Winter Holidays Around the World Project :

The winter holidays included in this project are Diwali, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Kwanzaa, Christmas and Chinese New Year. While some of these holidays are religious, this project focuses on the non-religious traditions celebrated during each of these holidays. Each holiday includes the following:

• •A brief informational reading page that gives a background on the holiday
• •A two-page task/related set of story problems related to the holiday traditions/celebrations
• •One page of fluency practice related to the holiday

The following topics are covered throughout the project (this guide can help you pick and choose which parts you would like students to work on. For example, you might want some students to only do the fluency pages from each holiday, or you may want some students to only do specific holidays etc.)

• •Plan the Trip (5.NBT.B.7)
  • Operations with large numbers and decimals to tenths
• Diwali (5.NBT.B.7, 5.MD.A.1)
  • Firework Height: measurement conversion and operations with decimals to tenths
  • Days of the Celebration: dividing decimals to tenths fluency practice
• Hanukkah (5.NBT.A.2, 5.NBT.A.3, 5.NBT.B.7)
  • Hanukkah Gifts: add decimals to hundredths
  • Chocolate Coins: multiply and divide by powers of 10 fluency practice, comparing decimals
• Las Posadas (5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.7, 5.MD.A.1)
  • Parade Problems: measurement conversion with decimals to hundredths and large whole number multiplication
  • Pinata Candy: Multiplication and division of decimals (using “basic facts” i.e. 0.8 x 7) fluency practice to hundredths
• Kwanzaa (5.NBT.A.3, 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.6, 5.NBT.B.7)
  • African Flags: Multiplication and division of large whole numbers
  • Kwanzaa Principles: multiplication of decimals (using “basic facts” i.e. 0.8 x 7) fluency practice to hundredths, comparing decimals
• Christmas (5.NBT.A.1, 5.NBT.B.7)
  • Tree Farm: 10 times more than a number and decimal operations to hundredths
  • Christkindl Market: multiplication of decimals fluency to tenths
• •Chinese New Year (5.NBT.B.7)
  • Dragon Dances: Decimal division to tenths
  • Red Envelopes: Whole number and decimal multiplication and division and matching
    

The project includes 30 pages of rigorous, real-world math application problems (30 printable pages and 30 digital pages)! A really fun project to get your students engaged in applying the skills they’ve learned so far in fifth grade math!

Description of the Differentiated Holiday Math Story Problems:

This resources focuses on whole number and decimal multiplication and division, as well as addition/subtraction and mixed-operation story problems. It also includes multiplicative compare, measurement conversion and area/perimeter problems. All three levels are aligned to standards 5.NBT.A.4, 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.6, 5.NBT.B.7, and 5.MD.A.1.

• One Candy Cane Level: basic problem-solving skills. Mostly single-step word problems with a few two-step problems. Multiplication and division of decimals to the tenths. Basic story problem structure with result unknown in most problems. Equal groups and multiplicative compare included. All problems can be solved using concrete visual models.
• Two Candy Cane Level: intermediate problem-solving skills. Single and multi-step word problems. Mixed word problem structure of operations with whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths with multiplicative compare and division. Bar models, concrete visuals models as well as more abstract models can be used.
• Jingle Bell Level: advanced problem-solving skills. Multi-step word problems. Mixed word problem structures with unknown in all places as well as compare problems, most which require bar models to solve. Operations on decimals to the hundredths. Most multi-step problems are two and three-step problems. Abstract visual models as well as variables can be used to solve these problems.

This resource includes

• Four pages of word problems for each level (3 challenging word problems per page) (a total of 12 questions per level) (entire resource includes 36 unique story problems, and 12 total pages).
• Each page is a fun Holiday theme, and includes Holiday-themed word problems
• An answer key for every page
• A PDF printable version as well as a digital Power Point (.pptx) AND LINKS TO GOOGLE SLIDES VERSIONS OF EACH LEVEL!
