Description
Students do not learn to become Open-Minded by Osmosis! This Google Slides mini-unit will help you explicitly teach the IB Learner Profile attribute in a fun and meaningful way. Get your students up and moving around, talking to each other, asking questions, and learning how to see things from multiple perspectives. Celebrate the diversity of thought in your class, and help students learn about and practice being Open-Minded.
This mini-unit includes a free link to my FREE Difference of Opinion Bingo learning engagement to help your students develop and practice Open-Mindedness.
As IB PYP, MYP, and DP teachers and administrators, we are expected to support our students to develop the IB Learner Profile traits, but we are not given much guidance about how to do this. We need to be explicitly teaching students about these attributes and giving them concrete, scaffolded practice in the skills required.
This learning engagement is also suitable for other curriculum programs with a focus on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Open-Mindedness. It also supports an atmosphere of DEIJ (Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Justice).
Features:
- Material for 8-9 short lessons (perfect for PYP Morning Meeting time or MYP homeroom sessions).
- Flexible - Choose which lessons work for your students (make the unit as long or as short as you like). Teach as a distinct mini-unit, or spread throughout the year.
- A thought-provoking picture book to introduce being Open-Minded (with Epic eBook link if you don't have the actual book available)
- Official IB definition of Open-Minded, along with child-friendly definition
- Visible Thinking Routines from Harvard Project Zero
- FREE Difference of Opinion Bingo
- Active movement activities
- Fun games and literature-based activities
- Creative, Hands-On, Meaningful, Authentic learning engagements
- Link to Open-Minded music video by artists and children from around the world
- Teacher notes and suggestions
- Varied, open-ended learning engagements - suitable for all age levels, and EAL / ELL / ESL learners. NO WORKSHEETS!
- Pre-Assessment and Reflection opportunities
- Modelling of Inquiry-Based learning strategies you can use year-round
Don't recreate the wheel or be left in the dark about how to teach this concept. This Google Slideshow has all you need!
All my resources are hands-on, open-ended, easy for teachers, and engaging for kids!
