Description
If we want students to understand a concept, we have to teach them! Created by a 23-year veteran IBPYP Teacher and former PYP Co-ordinator / School Visit Team Member, this 8-page Google Slides Mini-Unit of 4-5 short lessons will help you explicitly teach the PYP Key Concept CAUSATION, within the context of your current Unit of Inquiry. It features authentic learning engagements - not worksheets! You can use the Slides as a front-of-class presentation, or as a mini-unit planner for yourself as a teacher.
This short Google Slideshow mini-unit can be used for in-person or online learning, or downloaded as a PowerPoint.
As IB PYP teachers, we are often expected to have our students understand the PYP Key Concepts, but we are given very little guidance about how to actually teach these concepts - that's why I have started making mini-units for the Key Concepts (and the Learner Profile Attributes).
These lessons are transdisciplinary and use your current Unit of Inquiry as a context to teach the Key Concept (rather than being stand-alone lessons to teach in isolation). This means you do have time to teach it!
These are student-centered learning engagements which will help your students really understand what Causation means. It does all this without any worksheets - modelling and introducing you and your students to a variety of strategies for authentic, inquiry-based teaching and learning.
This PYP Key Concept Causation mini-unit introduces students to the full IB definition of Causation (not just the key question):
Question: Why is it like this?
Definition: The understanding that things do not just happen, that there are causal relationships at work, and that actions have consequences.
For each aspect of the definition, an authentic, meaningful, and relevant learning engagement is included. It deals with Cause and Effect as well as Actions and Consequences.
Features:
- Material for 4-5 short lessons
- Literature-Based: A humorous picture book to introduce Causation to your students (plus the link to the audiobook which you can access for free on Epic, and a YouTube video, if your library does not have the book).
- Official IB definition of Causation
- Fun games and literature-based activities
- Creative, Hands-On, Meaningful, Authentic learning engagements
- Broad view of Causation - not just 'Why is it like this?'
- Teacher notes and suggestions
- Varied, open-ended learning engagements - suitable for all age levels, and EAL / ELL / ESL learners. NO WORKSHEETS!
- Modelling of Inquiry-Based learning strategies you can use year-round
Don't recreate the wheel or be left in the dark about how to teach this concept. This Google Slideshow has all you need!
