Description

This biography resource about Martin Luther King, Jr. is designed as a multi-purpose informational reading and writing unit for upper elementary students. It can be used in an ELA or Social Studies class. Each of the four texts can be used one at a time (but in sequence);

---Three of the passages begin with a pre-reading question that can be answered in written form or used as a class discussion topic.

There are a total of eight student work pages:

  • Each text has a page of questions (inference, factual, and opinion);
  • Each text has a page of vocabulary and grammar work;
  • Each of the four passages has a short creative writing activity.

The four passages are:

Part 2: Martin Luther King, Jr. as a Young Man;

Part 3: King’s Early Activism; and

Part 4: A National Hero.

---Also included is a pre-reading vocabulary page that includes words that I did not designate as vocabulary words on the student work pages but might be new to some students. I have also created a FREE resource using these words and the answer key.

---Answer keys are provided for all objective student work (8 pages).

Please do have a look at the preview where you will be able to get a good idea of my writing style and whether the level is suitable for your students.

This was perfect for our biography unit. I had my students work in four groups focusing on a specific part of MLK's life and they were really engaged with the readings! I used the comprehension questions the next day and they enjoyed them and learned a lot. Thank you for this excellent product!
