Description

Multiply and Divide Rational Number Operations is a fun way to engage students in multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals! Rational number operations are the foundation of 6th Grade, 7th Grade, and 8th Grade mathematics.

Multiply and Divide Rational Number Operations Task Cards includes 16 open-ended task cards (24 total questions). These task cards include basic computation for practice and review, as well as real-world application problems.

Ideas for first-time instruction or STAAR review:

  • Give each pair of students one task card. Let them work the card and walk around to give feedback. Provide an incentive like a game for each correct answer.

  • Provide individuals or small groups of students with copies of task cards to complete.

  • Work the full pages whole group, displaying the images on an interactive whiteboard or projector.

  • Laminate the full pages or place in clear covers in a binder so students can do during math stations.

  • Copy specific pages to use as an assessment. Answers keys are available for every page.

Make first-time instruction or STAAR Prep fun, and students will learn more!!!

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Interpret the product (๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ) ร— ๐˜ฒ as a parts of a partition of ๐˜ฒ into ๐˜ฃ equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations ๐˜ข ร— ๐˜ฒ รท ๐˜ฃ. For example, use a visual fraction model to show (2/3) ร— 4 = 8/3, and create a story context for this equation. Do the same with (2/3) ร— (4/5) = 8/15. (In general, (๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ) ร— (๐˜ค/๐˜ฅ) = ๐˜ข๐˜ค/๐˜ฃ๐˜ฅ.)
Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, create a story context for (2/3) รท (3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient; use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3) รท (3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ) รท (๐˜ค/๐˜ฅ) = ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ/๐˜ฃ๐˜ค.) How much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 3/4-cup servings are in 2/3 of a cup of yogurt? How wide is a rectangular strip of land with length 3/4 mi and area 1/2 square mi?
