Description

Multiplying decimals notes and practice are all on one sheet with the math wheels! Introduce or review concepts with this engaging, colorful note-taking format.

What is a math wheel? A math doodle wheel is a type of graphic organizer where students can:

  • Take notes inside the math wheel
  • Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
  • Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
  • Color the background pattern

Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year to use as a mini anchor chart/reference sheet.

  • The wheels are excellent for reviewing concepts as part of your test prep.

Each section of the Multiplying Decimals Wheel outlines a step of the process:

1) Estimate

2) Set up like whole number multiplication

3) Multiply like whole number multiplication

4) Place the decimal point

5) Compare answer to estimate

  • One example is used throughout the wheel, but there may be enough white space to add another example if you want. The example is a 'decimal times decimal' problem.

This decimal multiplication resource includes:

1) THREE versions of the student wheel

  • ‘Open’ for students to write notes - this version is most flexible, space-wise
  • ‘Fill-in’ notes, to help control student use of space; this version also has a multiplication sign and line, to guide where to set up example problem
  • Pre-filled notes; this version also has a multiplication sign and line, to guide where to set up example problem; answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this version

⭐️Each of the versions comes with a patterned background and with no pattern in the background.

2) Teacher key/wheel with completed notes and examples

3) Colored sample of wheel (sample is little different than current student wheel; adjustments in heading sizes have been made since the sample was created; content is the same)

4) PowerPoint file with two editable templates ~ you can add text to make your own math wheels, if you’d like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).

Features of this easy-to-use resource:

1) Notes sections with example that carries through the steps

2) Guided or independent practice: 8 problems in the pattern around the circle; the problems use decimals that go to the thousandths place

3) Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows, however they like.

Coloring the background, if you use the patterned versions:

  • Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time….coloring the background could be an ‘early finisher’ activity, center activity, homework, etc.
  • Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave sections white.
  • Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines in another.
  • This coloring part is just a chance to be creative and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide.

What teachers are saying about this resource:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I love the wheels! This was a very simple introduction to how to multiply numbers with decimals. I can have a chatty group, so I set the timer for how long I want to spend filling out information... and any leftover time is for coloring! It's a great way to keep them motivated and on task.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “These are great notes on multiplying decimals to add to interactive notebooks!”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Students and I are in love with all of the math wheels. The students pull the math wheels out before they pull out any other notes or resources.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I used this with small groups for notes after teaching a mini lesson whole class. I like that it is easy to follow, it's organized, and gives lots of practice for students. I also love the ability to color it!”
