Description

Multiplying fractions and mixed numbers can be introduced or reviewed with this engaging, colorful note-taking math wheel format.

What is a math wheel? A math doodle wheel is a type of graphic organizer where students can:

  • Take notes inside the math wheel
  • Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
  • Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
  • Color the background pattern

Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year as a resource/study tool.

  • The wheels are excellent for reviewing concepts as part of your test prep.
  • You can even enlarge the math wheels and use them as posters or anchor charts.

Each section of the wheel outlines a step of the fraction multiplication process:

1) Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions

2) Cross out

3) Multiply numerators; multiply denominators

4) Simplify

This multiplying fractions notes and practice resource includes:

1) THREE versions of the student wheel

  • ‘Open’: students write all notes and examples
  • ‘Fill-in’: helps control use of space
  • Pre-filled: for absentees or students who need them; answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this version.

⭐️EACH version comes with a patterned background & with no pattern in background

2) Teacher key/wheel with completed notes and examples

3) Colored sample

4) PowerPoint file with two editable wheel templates, so you can add text to make your own math wheels, if you’d like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).

Features of this easy-to-use multiplying fractions notes and practice resource:

1) Notes and examples in each section: there are two examples included in each step/section.

  • The examples are labeled Example 1 and Example 2 in each section

2) Guided practice or individual practice: 6 problems in the pattern around the circle

3) Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows

Coloring the background, if you use the patterned versions:

  • Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time….coloring the background could be an ‘early finisher’ activity,, homework, etc.
  • Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave sections white.
  • Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines in another.
  • This coloring part is just a chance to be creative and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide:-)

What teachers are saying about this multiplying fractions notes and practice resource:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My 6th graders really like these visual models for our sometimes tricky math concepts. They also love making them their own to color and remember the steps.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I want them all! This was perfect for early finishers!!! This would also be perfect to have students complete on their own for a classwork assignment or station while teacher works with small group.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I am a huge advocate and user of math notes. This design was helpful for my students to understand the concept and it will be a reference tool going forward. Thank you!”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My students loved anytime we used doodle notes in mathematics class. It helped them stay organized, they were very much engaged and loved all the coloring. We did many of these throughout the year.”

This was lots of fun! I used it with my 5th grade math tutoring group. It helped me remember how to multiply fractions considering I currently teach 1st. The kids liked being able to color once their work was finished.
