Home and Distance Learning Resources

Each Performance Expectation includes a set of 5 questions that require students to use Science and Engineering Practices as well as Crosscutting Concepts to demonstrate understanding of the Disciplinary Core Ideas. The SEPs and CCCs are listed for each PE. Keep in mind that the tasks require more time than a standard test question, therefore, there should be fewer questions on a test which allows for more time to solve the problems.

SAMPLE Task:

MS-PS4-2 A student was wading through a shallow, slow moving river searching for stones. She observed a unique rock, but when she initially reached down for it, it wasn’t in the spot it appeared through the water. Observe the model below (provided in document) and answer the questions.

a. Why wasn’t she able to grab the rock on the first try?

b. In the box below, draw a new model that explains where the rock is. Be sure to explain your thinking.

This product includes:

  1. Background info on NGSS assessments and tasks
  2. 15 EDITABLE questions, tasks, etc.
  3. Answer Key
  4. Ideas for differentiation
  5. Links to external resources

Questions provided for each standard:

MS-PS4-1 (5 questions)

MS-PS4-2 (5 questions)

MS-PS4-3 (4 questions and 1 research task)

Standards

NGSSMS-PS4-1
Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave. Emphasis is on describing waves with both qualitative and quantitative thinking. Assessment does not include electromagnetic waves and is limited to standard repeating waves.
NGSSMS-PS4-2
Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. Emphasis is on both light and mechanical waves. Examples of models could include drawings, simulations, and written descriptions. Assessment is limited to qualitative applications pertaining to light and mechanical waves.
NGSSMS-PS4-3
Integrate qualitative scientific and technical information to support the claim that digitized signals are a more reliable way to encode and transmit information than analog signals. Emphasis is on a basic understanding that waves can be used for communication purposes. Examples could include using fiber optic cable to transmit light pulses, radio wave pulses in wifi devices, and conversion of stored binary patterns to make sound or text on a computer screen. Assessment does not include binary counting. Assessment does not include the specific mechanism of any given device.
