Description

One-step algebraic equations is the focus of this math wheel. Use this engaging note-taking format to introduce or review solving one-step equations!

What is a math wheel? It's a type of graphic organizer where students can:

  • Take notes inside the math wheel
  • Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
  • Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
  • Color the background pattern

Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year as a personal anchor chart or reference sheet.

  • The wheels are excellent for reviewing concepts as part of your test prep.
  • You can even enlarge the math wheels and use them as posters or anchor charts!

The sections of the math wheel include:

1) Addition Equations

2) Subtraction Equations

3) Multiplication Equations

4) Division Equations

Each section of the wheel has:

  • An equation
  • A statement about which operation to use to solve the equation type
  • One example with room to solve. There is additional space to add your own examples if you’d like (the sample uses space to show substitution to check, but you could use the space to add a second or third equation to solve)

This resource includes an updated wheel and the original wheel.

  • The original wheel uses more space for headings, which means there isn’t as much space for additional examples.
  • The original version now has with 3 notes options, in case you do prefer this version.
  • The new version uses less space for the headings, giving you more space for additional examples.

In this resource:

1) THREE versions of the student wheel (3 versions of new and of original)

  • ‘Open’ for students to write notes - this version is most flexible, space-wise
  • ‘Fill-in’ notes, to help control student use of space
  • Pre-filled notes for new students, absentees, or students who need pre-filled notes; answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this version

⭐️Each version comes with a patterned background and with no pattern in the background.

2) Teacher key/wheel with completed notes and examples for each wheel

3) Colored samples of original wheel

4) PowerPoint file with two editable templates ~ you can add text to make your own wheels (for classroom use only - not commercial use)

Features of this easy-to-use resource:

1) Notes, examples, and space for additional examples

2) Guided or independent practice: 8 problems in the pattern around the circle (2 of each equation type)

3) Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows

Coloring the background:

  • Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time….coloring the background could be an ‘early finisher’ activity, center activity, homework, etc.
  • Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave sections white.
  • Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines in another.
  • This coloring part is just a chance to be creative and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide:-)

What teachers are saying about this resource:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️“Very happy with the simple set up. Kids loved to be able to color their notes.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️“I love this one page summary for students to have for reference on how to do simple algebra! I can't wait to use this with my students this year.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️“I used this to glue into my student's math notebooks for a one-stop resource for examples of all 4 types of equations.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️“Used this as notes for solving one step equations. I had the kids cut out the circle to glue into the interactive notebook and do examples on the page around it. Loved the layout. Thank you!”

I printed out the page, using her instructions, to get a large poster from the slide, to use as an anchor chart in the classroom. Then I printed out the same slide to get individual-sized copies for students to fill out, color, and put into their interactive notebooks, for this particular topic: one-step equations. Very nice!
