Summarizing Mini Lesson. PowerPoint. Quiz. Student Notes. This mini-lesson compares a summary to retelling and paraphrasing. Sample texts are provided to guide students through analyzing the plot, main events, problem and solution. Students will paraphrase three paragraphs and retell events. This mini-lesson helps students apply two skills that essential to summarizing: retelling and paraphrasing.
SUMMARIZING
Reading is the process of making meaning from text. Good readers fluently engage in four critical comprehension sub-skills: summarizing, generating questions, clarifying meanings, and inferring. When readers summarize literary texts, they are paraphrasing the main events. To summarize is to retell the most important aspects of the plot: problem, solution, and main events.
