Summarizing Mini Lesson #2 with PowerPoint and Quiz.
This mini-lesson build on Mini-lesson #1 by having students practice paraphrasing the problem, solution, and main events. Several sample texts are provided to guide students through the sub-skills needed to summarize.
The PowerPoint is great for direct instruction and guided practice through shared reading. Three texts are provided on the slides, in the student handouts, and in the outline, so you can use it however you like. The focus is on paraphrasing the plot. The lesson ends with students writing a summary on their own.
The quiz in this lesson is a different version of the quiz in Mini-Lesson 1. It is perfect as a retest. Or you can use it to measure growth from the first lesson!
Reading is the process of making meaning from text. Good readers fluently engage in four critical comprehension sub-skills: summarizing, generating questions, clarifying meanings, and inferring. When readers summarize literary texts, they are paraphrasing the main events. To summarize is to retell the most important aspects of the plot: problem, solution, and main events.
