CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.7 asks students to synthesize across different mediums. In order to meet this standard, teachers have to choose texts carefully, which takes a lot of time. Teacher have to find texts that suit students' abilities, the needs of the curricular spiral, and that are the appropriate length. On top of that, teachers also have to choose texts with themes, ideas, or topics that appear in multiple mediums. That's a lot of work!

To make this process less time consuming, I've put together this lesson for “Three Liberties: Past, Present, Yet to Come” by Julia Alvarez. To help students analyze this, I've designed pre-reading questions, analysis questions, and a visualization activity that asks students to synthesize the poem alongside historical propaganda. This lesson also helps students work on historical context, allusion, inference, vocabulary, text structure, tone, syntax, characterization, and author's purpose.
