Description
This product doubles as full digital lessons for the Concept Development portion of No prep-work needed for a full week of first grade math lessons with 355 slides bundled at a big discounted rate! These lessons support CCSS Operations and Algebraic Thinking (particularly CCSS.1.OA.1, CCSS.1.OA.5, and CCSS.1.OA.6) as well as Standard Mathematical Practices (particularly MP1, MP7, and MP8). It is designed for early first grade (particularly Topic I Lessons 33-37 of Module 1 Eureka) but can also be used for second half of kindergarten or to supplement or enhance other curriculums as it focuses on the same standards. It can also serve as a great review for second grade.
This entire product line doubles as an interactive Google Slide digital lessons for the Concept Development portion Engage New York Eureka program to be displayed on your Smart Board or shared on your screen and also contains interactive Google slides for independent or small group practice after the whole group lessons to be assigned or shared virtually to put the lesson into practice.
In Topic I allows students to learn methods for subtraction which involve subtracting 0 and 1, subtracting the whole number, subtracting one less than the whole number, and using familiar decompositions (5-groups and partners of 10 and partners of 9) to conceptualize subtraction as finding a missing part (1.OA.6). In Lesson 33, students use pictures and simple math drawings to show 0 less and 1 less and construct number sentences outside of a haunted house (1.OA.5). Students will come to the realization that the number remains the same or equals the preceding number (no matter how large or small the number is). Similarly, in Lesson 34, students explore what happens in both n-n and n-(n-1) situations that occur at a Halloween party, where Munchie the Monster eats all the food (or all but one as he gets full). In Lesson 35, students transfer their knowledge of both doubles and fives to the context of subtraction, where the Math Detectives explore the closet of the 5 witch sisters. Lessons 36 and 37 continue on this explicit decomposition and subtraction connection, as students use their knowledge of partners of 10 and partners of 9 to help them solve subtraction stories and equations efficiently. In Lesson 36 the Math Detectives investigate more of the witches' house and find partners to 10 throughout the home (9 candles lit vs. 1 unlit, 7 magic potions vs. 3 unused on the shelf, etc.). Topic I is full of students using strategies and math tools that they have learned, and discussing those strategies and patterns in order to gain fluency for subtraction within 10. This fluency will serve as a solid foundation as they work with higher numbers in Module 2.
Use these lessons as whole group shared on your Interactive whiteboard, shared on your screen on Google Meet or Zoom for distant learning, or as a small group lesson in present mode. Each slide is annotated with dialogue in speech bubbles to guide your lesson, but feel free to make it your own! Each slide is designed to serve as a foundation for which math discourse in the classroom can build and grow.
After the lessons are the independent slides for students. You can assign these slides in Google Classroom or on Seesaw (or any other program that supports Google slide products). Simply hold "ctrl" to select the slides you want to assign, go to file and make a copy. From there you can assign as you normally would on your preferred digital platform. These slides are interactive when in edit mode only! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here or you can email me (see my TOU below for contact information).
