Exponential Functions and Grain of Rice Project

This is a differentiated activity incorporating exponential functions and "The Grain of Rice Story." As a class, the story is read in play form. Students are assigned parts to read. Then students are broken into groups designated by readiness. Each group is assigned a task based on the story. All tasks require the groups to make a table, graph, and write an equation based on a situation related to the story read. Tasks increase in difficulty from 1 through 4. I use this project during our multiplying decimals unit. Students apply their knowledge of decimals to calculate the percent discount on items at a store. Students create posters for their store and choose items to sell along with the price and percent discount. Other students can "buy" their items at a discounted price by calculating the percent discount. A rubric and practice assignment are included as well that I use to practice this skill.

Students will create a town map made of different geometric figures. They will demonstrate their knowledge of parallel and perpendicular lines, acute and obtuse angles, geometric shapes as well as many other geometric concepts through this creative and fun project. This project can be adapted to higher level geometry courses and high school classes. You can add parameters to the geometric shaped buildings (ex. must label the dimensions of the building given a certain area or perimeter).
