Subtraction Algorithms for all grades

This file contains the notes I took at the NCTM Conference in Chicago. I attended a presentation on Subtraction by Frances Stern. She taught various ways to subtract with regrouping. My most favorite to use in class is the number line and France's way on pages 6-7. The France way is what I refer to in my class as "Give, Give It Back"...It's SO MUCH EASIER TO TEACH AND UNDERSTAND than the Traditional U.S. way. I don't know where this has been all my life. Please give it a try! It takes some pract

WhiteBoard Math
This free resource from WhiteBoard Math uses elephants and a few truckloads of peanuts to divide with the standard algorithm.  We start by defining division terms: dividend, divisor, quotient, then demonstrates, step-by-step, dividing into a 4-digit dividend.  As with other WhiteBoard videos, the content starts simple then progresses towards more complex thinking.   This is our  free product because so many teachers are  looking for a good video on how to do “long division”.  Your students will

2 & 3 Digit Expanded Form Addition with Regrouping

For students to understand why the traditional algorithm works, they must know the rules of place value. By blowing numbers apart and adding each place value, students will develop confidence with regrouping. These strategy cards can be used for an entire unit and eliminate the need for photocopying work sheets. Students who work faster, do more cards or move up a level faster. Slower students do not become overwhelmed with volume of work as they are only ever faced with one problem at a ti

Students begin to grasp the concept of the Standard Algorithm for Long Division by working the algorithm side by side with a Skip Count Line. This is an important step in mastering the Standard Algorithm for Division (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down). After students master this, they slowly add more digits to the dividend and the divisor until they are doing 4-digit dividends, and 2-digit divisors, (by the end of 5th grade). The packet includes Classwork, Homework, Exit Ticket, and a b

It also examines ways of viewing fractions and basic algebraic equations. This packet is based on ways my students have solved these type of problems at their various levels of understanding. I did not explicitly teach these strategies, but rather, presented them with the opportunity to think about the meaning of these operations through problem solving. These are wa

Distributive axiom applications

The distributive axiom is the basis for the multiplication algorithm involving factors with multiple digits, and it is also the fastest way to do mental math. While it is increasingly added to elementary math texts, the coverage is often sketchy, misplaced, and poorly integrated. In addition, no obvious reason is given for learning it. This slide set is designed to help walk students through steps needed to use the distributive axiom of multiplication with respect to addition. It also covers whe

This set of 4 guides is helpful when learning long multiplication algorithm or as an accommodation for students with special learning needs. The pages use alternating grey and white rows, which is helpful for students with perceptual challenges. For some students, plain white can seem to blend together and make the numbers look jumbled. This page also uses horizontal and vertical lines to help align the problem, and separate the digits to allow for successful computation. Each page offers a s
