About the store
I am certified to teach high school math and chemistry. I have taught high school algebra and geometry as well as college chemistry. I have B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry. Much of my professional career has been as a research scientist; however, I have extensive outreach experience. I am known as "Dr. Ed" at my daughters' elementary school, where I often visit. My science videos were featured as part of a summer program on the Pensacola News Journal's website, and I have Youtube videos on making and using red cabbage indicator.

This unit on soil science contains a 16-page student section that covers soil components (clay, sand, and silt, loam, humus, soil texture (including the texture triangle), soil horizons, and movement of water through soil. Five discovery labs are embedded within the student hand-out: (1) soil make-up (visual inspection), (2) describing soil (by feel and settling), (3) the ribbon test for clay content (including an adapted method for small hands), (4) separating sand, silt, and clay by sedimenta

This worksheet (two sides) gives practice for converting analog clock face time to digital time. Each of the 24 problems has four choices. Students circle the correct choice. The clocks are modeled after standardized test sample questions to give students extra practice with clocks whose minute hands do not extend past the numerals. This is a basic black and white worksheet designed to be photocopied for class use.

I have used this set of worksheets and activities with my daughter's kindergarten class. It teaches science with a mix of hands-on and written work, gives handwriting practice, and exposes students to different question types. The lesson can be completed in 1-2 hours with additional follow-up work using activity centers.

This is a complete packet for teaching phases of the moon. It includes several worksheets: word search, completion (fill-in-the-blank), short answer, and matching. It also includes a test with several question types. The main teaching tool is a diagram showing how and why the moon's phases arise. Another diagram shows the phases of earth as viewed from a new moon or full moon. Three worksheets are based on completing the lunar phases diagram. All are provided in black and white to use as photoco

These problems are for intensive practice or remediation on pattern recognition and application of geometric or number patterns to problem solving. There are 10 problems intended to be worked in a timed setting of 24 minutes. Each problem has four choices. The problems are designed to mirror difficulty and complexity consistent with the 3rd grade FCAT math test.

Gut Reaction is a game that teaches about the alimentary canal or digestive system. The game board files are printed onto two 11 x 17 sheets and put together. Students roll a die to advance through the alimentary canal. As they progress, they land on spaces that require them to draw question cards and answer a question about an organ, function, or process. Wrong answers move them backwards and right answers move them forwards. By going through the game, students learn facts about digestion, orga

Teach your students how to write a modern haiku in six easy steps. The sheet contains an example of a traditional (5-7-5) haiku and a modern haiku. Both examples are fall-themed. With all the food and fun activities of fall (especially Halloween's sights and sounds), haiku is an obvious choice for a short creative writing exercise.

This unit on states of matter is designed to push students to integrate other science knowledge. Use of common home items helps to increase familiarity. Solids are taught with the addition of angle of repose, and reproducible protractors are included to enable measurements in the classroom. Students are given a checklist approach to help with confusing materials, such as baby powder. Lesson sheets lay out the material and worksheets follow the lessons. Individual worksheets are designed so that

This series of three worksheets is designed to help students learn to reduce fractions to lowest terms. It uses realistic word problems and pictures to represent various fractions not in lowest terms and to help show the equivalence. It demonstrates equivalence of small-denominator fractions (sixteenths, eighths, quarters, halves) using a bar broken into congruent portions. It contains worked examples and problems for students to work on their own. It can be used as remediation or enrichment. Pr

With two juxtaposed clock faces, students can compare and contrast times with interchanged hands, such as 12:30 and 6:00 or 9:30 and 6:45. The hour hand is correctly positioned as the minute hand is advanced. The spreadsheet will permit clock arithmetic so that 3:90 will be displayed as 4:30 on the clock faces. Distributive axiom through geometric patterns

Created by

The distributive axiom can seem rather abstract to elementary students, so teaching it through concrete geometric patterns can help to clarify the concept. In these slides, the distributive axiom is approached by treating the multiplier as the number of rows or columns and chopping the line of objects (multiplicand) into two groups (addends). It allows students to see where the addition and the multiplication come into play, and it relates the distributed math problem to the undistributed one. I

Distributive axiom applications

The distributive axiom is the basis for the multiplication algorithm involving factors with multiple digits, and it is also the fastest way to do mental math. While it is increasingly added to elementary math texts, the coverage is often sketchy, misplaced, and poorly integrated. In addition, no obvious reason is given for learning it. This slide set is designed to help walk students through steps needed to use the distributive axiom of multiplication with respect to addition. It also covers whe

Teaching style

I believe in extensive experiential learning. However, I also believe we teach by showing, modeling, and explaining. We have to give students opportunities to make mistakes so we can find their errors and we have to let them puzzle over problems so they are ready for answers. I have bits of Montessori, humanist, and constructivist in my style. I believe that writing across the curriculum is critically important and should begin as soon as students can read and write. I like project-based learning, but I believe it needs to be structured and guided so that it does not turn into a craft project.
