Building Big Engineering Unit Assessments

These five mini-assessments can be paired along with a study of Building Big or any type of engineering or structures unit. It covers and assesses knowledge on the following structures: bridges, domes, skyscrapers, dams, and tunnels. These are not meant to teach the content, but rather to help you check your instruction. If students do not perform well on a quiz after studying the structure, you can make sure to reteach whatever is needed before moving on to the next structure. **Answer keys a

Building Bricks Task Cards

Use these task cards to challenge students to build directed creations using building bricks. There are five sets of task cards, with a slight increase of challenge from the first set to the last. These five sets are also reproduced with icons of what students need to create, so that the ability to read is not a requirement to succeed., As a student makes each item on the challenge card there is a space for a check mark (or I like to stamp the space) to show they have completed that item. This project is a great way to introduce measuring with students of all ages. You can do basic measuring with K-1 with a ruler using inches and centimeters. Then increase the expectation with 2-6 using area and perimeter. If you want, you can even include volume depending on your students. Either way you implement, it is sure to be an engaging activity that students will love!!

This is a project outline/presentation to guide the students on following the engineering process to build a Rube Goldberg machine. Each day I assigned certain steps and gave the students time to spend on each step. We shared the research with the groups. Before students moved on they had to show me their design prototype to make sure they had at least 3 simple machines. You can increase the amount of simple machines or say at least 5 simple machines and some can be repeated.
