A pairs / small group activity for students to practice what they know about limits. Each group gets a formula for a piecewise-defined function and 18 cards. They must determine which six cards are true for their function. As an extension, groups who finish can be assigned a set of six of the remaining cards and create a function that has those properties. The file contains detailed instructions as well as an answer key. Each card has a letter written on it, which allows teachers to quickly

After students are introduced to the bell curve (the normal probability distribution function), I have them solve problems based on it. The TI series of calculators has the normalcdf function built-in, and I want my students to know how to make use of this cumulative distribution function to calculate probabilities, or to calculate an unknown quantity, such as the standard deviation. I use it within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions.

Last Man Standing: A Hands-On Activity to Introduce Exponential Functions

This hands-on activity helps students develop an understanding for how to use an exponential function (y=ab^x) to model different situations. This specific activity has students start with 100 squares that are "Alive" and they shake them and drop them every round and count how many squares survive each round. They will eventually develop an exponential function (y=100(0.50)^x) to model the number of squares left as a function of how many rounds have passed. Students will then graph their functio

During the summer, my IB/Precalculus students need to keep their skills sharp, so I wrote a series of worksheets for this purpose. This particular worksheet focuses on geometric problem-solving: it requires students to break a shape down into its component parts, and to determine the areas of those parts using geometry and trigonometry. The central question is this: How do you make parallel cuts to a circular cuts that divide the area into equal parts? Because students don't yet have the calc
