Polynomial Function Project - Roller Coaster

Created by
Algomath
In this project, students learn how to use polynomial function to model roller coaster rides. In this first part, they are given some polynomial functions to find the relative maximum/minimum, increasing/decreasing intervals, x- and y-intercepts, etc. They will explore the average rate of change. In the second part of the project, students are asked design their own roller coaster given some basic criteria. Students should use graphing devices/computer applications to complete this project.

Exponential Functions and Grain of Rice Project

This is a differentiated activity incorporating exponential functions and "The Grain of Rice Story." As a class, the story is read in play form. Students are assigned parts to read. Then students are broken into groups designated by readiness. Each group is assigned a task based on the story. All tasks require the groups to make a table, graph, and write an equation based on a situation related to the story read. Tasks increase in difficulty from 1 through 4. Groups must make a poster displaying

Function Transformations Creation Project

The problems and activities within this document are designed to assist students in achieving the following standards: HSF.LE.A.1 and HSF.BF.B.3 as well as the standards for mathematics practice. They are also designed to help the teacher assess the students’ abilities when it comes to working with the ideas within the standards. This document contains an activity that provides students the opportunity to create a function, answer questions regarding its transformations, and create questions re

Across the United States, aging infrastructure—especially in power and communication lines—is becoming a growing challenge. Outdated poles, aging support structures, and increasing demands from smart devices and electric vehicles are placing unprecedented strain on old systems. Students today will be tomorrow’s engineers, analysts, and decision-makers—and they need relevant experiences that prepare them for those roles. Elliptical Orbits Project (PBL) - Precalculus Conic Sections & Eccentricity

Created by
Megan Haynes
This engaging Project-Based Learning (PBL) activity brings conic sections to life by having students explore how ellipses model real-world orbits. Students select a planet, moon, comet, or satellite and use research to gather key data such as eccentricity and orbital measurements, then create a mathematical model using the equation of an ellipse. They will construct and label a diagram, analyze how eccentricity affects the shape of the orbit, and present their findings through a visual project.

Many AP Precalculus classrooms struggle to answer one question students ask again and again: “When will I ever use this in real life?” Traditional problem sets and textbook examples often fail to engage students or show them the practical power of Precalculus concepts. That’s where the Urban Rescue Ops: Using AP Precalculus to Model Structural Collapse and Rescue Paths project comes in—a dynamic, real-world project based learning (PBL) experience that transforms mathematical theory into life-s

IB recently changed Internal Assessments from having investigations of Type I and Type II to having a portfolio. Even though IB would no longer require students to do this type of investigation, I kept this mathematical investigation around anyway, as I think the process students go through to arrive at a formula is very valuable. I basically treat it as a project. The investigation has them look into the problem of determining the maximum number of "slices" a pizza may be cut into with a rand

This project is designed for students to be assessed on their understanding of sine and cosine functions along with sector area and arc length. It gets the students outside and measuring real-world data. Project has been attached as a word file so you can adapt it to your classroom. We used this for our Honors Math III class. Rubric attached on last page. ** For Task 1, we showed the students how it would be done with a remote control car and tape. For Task 3, we changed it from Decembe

Many students struggle to connect AP Precalculus with real-world problems. They may grasp the mechanics of exponential functions or inverse reasoning, but fail to see how these concepts apply beyond the classroom. Teachers, on the other hand, often seek creative and impactful ways to deliver AP Precalculus content through engaging, standards-aligned activities—but finding high-quality, ready-to-use project based learning (PBL) resources can be a challenge.
