Polynomial Function Project - Roller Coaster
In this project, students learn how to use polynomial function to model roller coaster rides. In this first part, they are given some polynomial functions to find the relative maximum/minimum, increasing/decreasing intervals, x- and y-intercepts, etc. They will explore the average rate of change. In the second part of the project, students are asked design their own roller coaster given some basic criteria. Students should use graphing devices/computer applications to complete this project.

Exponential Functions and Grain of Rice Project
This is a differentiated activity incorporating exponential functions and "The Grain of Rice Story." As a class, the story is read in play form. Students are assigned parts to read. Then students are broken into groups designated by readiness. Each group is assigned a task based on the story. Elliptical Orbits Project (PBL) - Precalculus Conic Sections & Eccentricity
This engaging Project-Based Learning (PBL) activity brings conic sections to life by having students explore how ellipses model real-world orbits. Students select a planet, moon, comet, or satellite and use research to gather key data such as eccentricity and orbital measurements, then create a mathematical model using the equation of an ellipse. They will construct and label a diagram, analyze how eccentricity affects the shape of the orbit, and present their findings through a visual project.

IB Math SL Practice Mathematical Investigation 2011 (Editable)
IB recently changed Internal Assessments from having investigations of Type I and Type II to having a portfolio.
Even though IB would no longer require students to do this type of investigation, I kept this mathematical investigation around anyway, as I think the process students go through to arrive at a formula is very valuable. I basically treat it as a project.
